A big ceremony is held on the 2nd Monday of January every year to celebrate and encourage all of those who reached the age of 20, considered as a matured adult in Japan.
It is a similar ceremony to bar & bat mitzvah among Jewish and others.
At coming of age ceremony "seijin shiki", boys usually wear suits, but girls wear "furisode", a special Japanese traditional wear.
It's different from kimono - furisode has long sleeves and is worn by unmarried women.
Some news channel for your image...
My "seijin shiki" was in January 2013, but I couldn't go to the venue because of heavy snow.
For those who live near Disney Land, the venue is Disney Resort with Mickey Mouse celebrating your coming of age :]]]
